Iteris traffic operations engineer Joshua McNeill was kind to have given the ITE and ASCE student members of UCI a tour of the Iteris facility in Santa Ana on April 13th, 2023.
He explained to the students about the traffic control services and products they provide to clients, such as Caltrans and the nearby cities, so as to implement state-of-the-art technology that allows traffic signals to be automatically adjusted based on ongoing traffic conditions and manual control from traffic management centers (TMCs). The students got to see the products, such as traffic control boxes and the video and radar detection systems manufactured in the facility. They learned about the usage of radar and fiber-optic cables within them to make traffic systems run smoothly and efficiently.
Senior traffic operations engineers show the UCI students the contents inside a traffic control box, a device used to automate traffic signal timings and implement traffic signal prioritization (TSP)
