January Bike Ride - Newport Back Bay Trail
The ASCE Orange County Sustainability Committee organized a bike ride around Newport Back Bay on Saturday, January 25. Sixteen bike enthusiasts attended the scenic ride on a beautiful day. Most of the 11 miles ride on a trail adjacent to the water body of the bay.
The cyclists experienced a variety of birds along the trail as the bay provides nesting grounds. Some participants met at Panera Bread after the ride for breakfast and networking.

February Bike Ride - San Diego Creek Trail
On February 22nd, the sustainability committee hosted a bike ride activity along the scenic San Diego Creek in Irvine. Participants enjoyed a picturesque 10-mile route that included a leisurely ride around Woodbridge Lake. The event featured a brief orientation on the creek's watershed and its historical significance, enriching the experience for all riders. To conclude the activity, everyone gathered for a delicious breakfast at the beautiful plaza of the Woodbridge Shopping Center, offering stunning views of the lake.

About the Author:
Sam Ali, PE is a retired Senior Civil Engineer previously employed with the Orange County Public Works, where he supervised a team of civil engineers to initiate new projects for the county’s Capital Improvement Program. The team prepared Preliminary Programming Reports for roads, bridges, flood control channels, and bikeways to determine if the project is feasible. He received both his Bachelor's and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from California State University Long Beach. He has been involved with ASCE Orange County for years and has served in multiple roles.
