PERSONAL LIFE
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in America’s Finest City – San Diego, CA.
What made you want to become an engineer?
Growing up, I had always enjoyed using math and science to solve technical problems so I knew that I would do something in STEM. I wanted to study coding or web design, but then I got inspired by the practical side of civil engineering and how civil engineers help shape the infrastructures around us.
Favorite hobbies, sports, and interests outside of engineering?
I enjoy watching soccer and volleyball. My favorite hobbies include experiencing new things, be it trying new food, traveling to a new place, or learning a new skill. I also love taking and editing photos, especially of food.

What college(s) did you attend? Can you list your degrees, any honors, and involvement in engineering organizations during school?
After high school, I went to San Diego Mesa Community College and graduated with an Associate’s degree in Physics as a valedictorian. I transferred to University of California, Berkeley and received my Bachelor’s degree with Honors in Civil and Environmental Engineering. I continued my graduate study with UC Berkeley and earned my Master’s degree in GeoEngineering. During my time at Berkeley, I was member of Tau Beta Pi and Chi Epsilon – national engineering and civil engineering honor societies.
WORK & PROFESSIONAL LIFE
Describe your responsibilities and some significant projects.
I am currently a Staff Engineer supporting Langan’s geotechnical team. My responsibilities include performing subsurface investigations, providing field observations and testing, preparing geotechnical reports and plans, and assisting my team in the design and analysis of the project. I have worked on diverse and challenging projects including stadiums, universities, commercial and residential developments.
What is your favorite part about being a Civil Engineer?
I love seeing my calculations and designs on paper turning into reality. As a geotechnical engineer, I often get to see the site when it is still undeveloped and the work during construction until it evolves into a complete structure.
What skills do you find most valuable to focus on in your career?
Continuing education and professional development! There’s always more to learn in engineering, so I think it’s important to maintain the relevant skills and knowledge. The personal relationships that I form through professional development are equally valuable to me, as learning can also occur in informal contexts such as through my peers or colleagues.
What drew you to your specific career path? If you could start your career differently, what would you do differently?
I was particularly drawn to the geotechnical side of civil engineering because of its involvement in both the design and construction of the project. If I could start my career differently, I would treat every relationship as a lifelong one. I am still trying to practice staying in touch with the people I met, because you never know how someone you briefly meet will play a role in your career down the road!
ASCE & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
How/Why did you get involved? Why did you choose to stay involved?
After my move to Orange County, I attended my first Board Meeting as a way to expand my network. I had a great time and was inspired by all of the great work YMF had contributed to the community. I stay involved because of the people, the networking, volunteering, and casual fun events that ASCE offers.
How has ASCE impacted your work and/or what is your favorite benefit of your involvement?
ASCE has helped me grow professionally and personally. Through my involvement with ASCE, I have met some incredible engineers and learned so much from attending ASCE’s technical tours, skill workshops, or speaker series. ASCE is also a way for me to stay connected with the local community and give back through a number of volunteering opportunities.
Who is someone you admire and why?
It is hard to specifically choose someone because I admire different qualities in everyone. Generally, I admire those who readily take on tasks that no one else is willing to do and those who are passionate about what they do. I think these qualities often go together because when people are passionate in what they do, they often go beyond anything that is expected of them.
If you have one piece of advice to give to young professionals what would it be?
Get up from your desk and go outside - literally and figuratively! Take a walk around the block or have lunch outside to give your brain some fresh air. Also, join some organizations or try something new when you are outside of work.
Lastly, what would be your personal motto?
My personal motto is, “Remember why you started.” Whenever I feel discouraged or defeated, I would remind myself of the reason why I started doing something in the first place. Having a clear purpose in mind helps keeping me motivated towards achieving my goals.
